Kate and Richard were living apart, staying with friends and family whilst trying to save money to buy a house. With Help to Buy, they bought their first home together much sooner than they expected. Kate told us “If you’d asked me six months ago what I thought I was going to buy, would it be this house? Absolutely not. I didn’t think this was within my reach”.
Kate and Richard saw the scheme advertised when viewing The Willows, West End, a community of homes just a short walk from where Kate was living with her mum. This scheme has allowed them to buy a stunning three bedroom, detached house on the development, allowing them have their own space to enjoy. Kate her sister Lucy grew up nearby The Willows and have known the site their entire lives. As children, the sisters played together on the field that the homes are now built upon, and even rode horses that were kept there.
Both Kate and Lucy are now living at The Willows, enjoying their beautiful, spacious gardens and taking time to appreciate the space and tranquillity of the neighbourhood when walking Kate and Richard’s two dogs in the evenings. Kate told us “When I look out the front of my house there’s just nothing. The sun comes up at the front and sets at the back, so in the morning you get the most incredible sunrises. There’s always birds and animals out there and even though you are in quite an ‘urban area’, you don’t feel like you are”.
Working for a recruitment agency, Kate has experience with housing developers and sometimes gets to visit their sites. She first fell in love with the show home at The Willows, and “When I came here, I knew that this was a little bit different and a little bit special”.
Kate also explained how the openness of the development was what initially drew her to The Willows. “When we came here and looked around, it was just so spacious in comparison to anywhere else that we’d been to look at houses. Anywhere else, you’d be literally surrounded by fifteen other people and this is just really different. The houses are beautiful and really big, and I just thought it was lovely”. Her and Richard visited several different sites looking for their dream home, but found that they always came back to The Willows. “Every time we walked into a house we said “it’s just not The Willows”. I think it was just the quality of the build, the layout, the size, everything was just so much more than what else we saw locally”.
By purchasing their home through the Help to Buy scheme, Kate and Richard only had to pay a 5% deposit, making their move much more affordable. “It was incredible” Kate told us, “I didn’t know you could use Help to Buy on this kind of house. I thought it was more for a ‘starter house’. Without the scheme, we would have definitely had to buy somewhere smaller, or got this in the future. But because we got this home, we won’t actually need to move again”.
Kate told us how much she’s enjoyed decorating her first home, saying “It just feels like my own. I sit here, on the sofa, surrounded by my stuff and it’s just really nice”. But, her boyfriend, Richard can’t get enough of the solar panels! “I didn’t realise how much joy the solar panels would bring Richard” Kate explained, “He’s obsessed with them and wants to get an app so you can see how much money you’re getting back.”
Kate also told us what her friends and family thought about their new home, “Everyone’s loved it. It’s all so bright and airy, so they’ve been really impressed. But I think the size of the garden is the one thing everyone’s mentioned.”
Congratulations to both Kate and Richard! It’s wonderful to hear how much you love your new home. We hope that you have an amazing first summer at The Willows, and get to enjoy plenty of barbeques in your garden!
